![fpirit, by which the extract will be brought to an uniform and tenacious mafs. ‘This extract is alfo to be prepared under two forms, one fofter and the other harder. Extradi of jalap. Pour upon jalap root powdered, rectified fpirit of wine; and with a due heat draw a tincture; and boil the refidue feveral times in water: after ftrain- ing, draw off the fpirit from the firft tincture, til it begins to thicken; infpiflate alfo the ftrained decoctions; then mix the two extracts, and, with a gentle fire, reduce them to the confiftence of a pill. | The cathartic extract. Take of focotorine aloes, an ounce and an half; ef the pith of coloquintida, fix drachms ; feam- mony, and the lJefler cardamom feeds hufked, of each rit being poured upon the colcquintida cut {mail, and the feeds bruifed, draw a tinCiure with a gentle heat continued four days; then, to the tincture preiled out, add the aloes and fcammony, firft fepa- Fately reduced to powder; and, theie being dil- folved, draw off the {pirit, and reduce the mafs ta the confiftence of a pill. Lhe gum and refin of aloes. ‘Take of facotoring aloes, four ounces 3 of water, a quart. Boil the aloes till it is diffolved as much as may be, and {fet al] by for a night: the retin will be precipitated to the bottom of the veflel: the liquor poured off or ftrained, being evaporated, will leave the gum.
