    Now it appears, from these enquiries, that hemorrhoidal tumors are not formed bj veins dilated into varices, and of con¬ sequence that all alarm which exists about hemorrhage on this score is, if not altogether, at least in a great part, without foundation, ' ' r r — « ' - *.- • '* . •- / ' f ■ Having thus fully established the prin¬ ciple, that the knife may be used with safety and advantage in the treatment of hemorrhoids, I can yet imagine, that the arguments which bring conviction to my mind may have a less powerful effect on the minds of the doubting and timid practi¬ tioner. But even he, I think, must acknow¬ ledge that abundant evidence has been ad¬ duced of the innocency and efficacy of the operation with the knife in cases of exter¬ nal excrescences, which bear a resemblance to those whose histories I have prefixed to these observations.
