![what slowly, and the last portion of it was dark in colour. In this condition it would doubtless have just commenced to be influenced by the ])ost-mortem influx of sugar from the liver. Notwithstanding this circumstance, I have considered it advisable to include the observation in the list. In a second set of observations to be now referred to the blood was collected during life. Chloroform in some of the experiments and ether in the others were first administered for the performance of the operation of exposure of the vessels. In each case the carotid artery of the one side and the jugular vein of the other were the vessels taken. After being cut down upon, and properly isolated from the surrounding tissues, a ligature was passed underneath, and tied so as to form a loose loop. In this way, the loops being left of sufficient length to reach the surface, the vessels could be pulled forward without exciting any pain or disturbance. A period of an hour and a half or two hours was allowed to elapse after this operative procedure, for the animal to recover from the influence of the anaesthetic. At the end of this time, without the use of any forcible restraint, and whilst the animal was seated quietly on a table, the vessels were drawn forward, and blood collected simultaneously from each. The process of analysis was then at once commenced, and here is a record of the results obtained in seven observations thus conducted.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21071640_0084.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
