Sm. 8vo, original sheepskin, large and fine copy, VERY RARE, £15 bs. THIS IS GEORGE BORROW’S TRANSLATION OF THE GOSPEL OF ST. LUKE INTO GITANO, OR THE LANGUAGE OF THE SPANISH GYPSIES. Borrow entered Spain in 1836 from Portugal over the boundary at La Caya, and staying at Badajoz for ten days, accomplished this translation. Later, when he had settled himself in Madrid, he printed and distributed LE. ONLY 250 COPIES WERE STRUCK OFF. It is the first specimen of a book ever attempted in any Gypsy dialect, and it was used freely by the great German philologist, Professor Pott, in the second part of his ** Die Zigewner in Europa und Asien” ; while it excited the attention of scholars throughout the continent. It is probable that the majority of copies were thumbed out of existence, in the hands of the Zincali. This copy has a note in pencil that it was given by Borrow to F. Sitwell at Seville in April 1840, where Borrow was residing until early in that month while completing his Gypsies of Spain. Consult Knapp. Life, Writings and Correspondence of George Borrow.
