About this work
Description
This is a programme challenging teenagers to be more critical of advertising messages and withstand peer pressure. A commercial extolling the virtues of a housewife's magic wand is quickly deconstructed by Sandi Easton (1950-1999; the female popstar Sheena Easton's first husband). He criticises adults for their double standards in terms of telling teenagers to do what they say rather than do what they do; the narration is set against busy scenes in a pub with people drinking and smoking. He then asks teens to consider peer pressure. A dramatised sequence shows a group of boys browsing through a Playboy magazine and then having it confiscated; Easton cynically asks whether this will lead to disciplinary action even though the teachers will enjoy looking through the magazine anyway. Then another silly commercial about a window cleaning product is shown; a girl wearing a bikini cleans a window. Easton then talks about why sexy girls are used to advertise cars and underwear (a pretty girl sits on top of a vintage car). Contemporary print advertising is seen (Gypsy bras). Easton strums his guitar. He talks about how advertising to men and women plays on their insecurities. A girl talks about her purchases; she explains how she buys all the latest fashion and makeup. A scene in a 1970s record shop is shown. Brief performance shots of screaming fans at Rolling Stones' concerts attitudes to celebrity lifestyles are discussed. Dead celebrities are mentioned and some teens sensibly comment on the audio that they would not like to be famous. The Osmonds jump into a car and drive away. Easton asks whether lifestyles are glamorised too much? Easton asks whether even he can be loved, spots, bad breath and all...?
