The Children’s Convalescent and Summer Holiday Fund, arranged similarly, for 143 children, visiting the homes and financially assisting those whose parents were unable to provide the necessary money. There has been an increase in the number of patients dealt Aimonere^ with by the Almoners’ Department ; possibly this is due epar nlLU • to the fact that owing to the long period of unemployment and the distress in the Colliery districts, more patients are in need of assistance than formerly. Many calls have been made on the Samaritan Fund to assist with the cost of fares in cases where patients must attend regularly for special forms of treatment. The Fund is a great boon, but unfortunately only small. Any additional money will be gratefully received. Convalescent treatment is very important, and more patients could be sent away should the Fund increase. The patients’ donations have increased, though not to the extent hoped for ; the largest amounts collected being from the X-Ray and Tight Department—£445 16s. 7d., and the Children’s Department—£118 5s. 5d. ; the total amount from all departments being £682 3s. 7d. So far the Almoners have dealt mainly with the Out- Patients ; it is hoped in the near future that the work may be extended to the Wards where there is much scope for social service. During 1628 the Diploma in Nursing was awarded by the Nursing staff. University of Feeds to three nurses who trained in the General Infirmary at Leeds, namely Alice Eden, Eira Jones, and I\. Yyvyan Harrison. During the year nine nurses were awarded the Scholarship which enables them to take the training at the Leeds Maternity Hospital in order to gain the Certificate of the Central Midwives’ Board. The Eva Moynihan Gold Medal for 1928 was awarded to Nurse Alice Eden, now Sister of No. 6 Ward. The Silver Medallists were Nurse Christina Robertson and Nurse Doris Procter.
