    REPRODUCTION Heirers and bulls usually commence to be mated at about two years old. Many males begin to cover at fifteen months. They are not, at that age, in such prime or capable of producing such good results as at three years old; but it is found that they can exert their breeding-powers fairly well at that time, and profit and convenience conjoin suitably with nature. If the breeder keeps a bull of his own, he can order his cows in milk, and calves, almost at his pleasure to suit his trade require- ments and supply of feed. Spring and autumn calvings are the rule, however. All the higher forms of animal life commenée as cells, and it 1s the union of the male and female cell, and the subsequent division of their result, that produce the finished article in the shape of a calf. The male cell or spermatozoon is derived from the testicles of the bull, and the ovule or ovum from the ovaries of the cow, two of which organs in her are situated in the region of the loins. ‘The ovule is a small body not unlike a cooked grain of sago, 54, of an inch in size, if such can be imagined. The spermatozoon or male cell is a tadpole-like body, about 53, of an inch long, con- tained in the semen or seed of the male. <A head, neck, and tail may be distinguished in it under the microscope,
