    CALVES AND THEIR REARING Curran dry bedding is best for the newly-born calf to drop on if he is produced under cover. Old, uneven floors which are not water-tight, and upon which cows may stand at calving-time, should have their surfaces levelled up or freshened once a year a‘ least. The standing or the box should be sweet, clean, and dry. The calf’s nostrils, when born, should be freed from mucus and shreds of tissue, and the mother should lick her offspring, and be encouraged to do so. ‘The first milk of the cow, containing colostrum, is good for the little animal. It acts as a purgative, and sta ts the digestive tract and its glands on their healthy way. In the mother a clean udder free from dirt and vagina! or uterine discharges is desirable. Attention shou'd be paid to the navel of the young creature, seeing that it is clean, becomes dry, and does not swell. In some eases the navel-string is tied with antiseptic tape or cord about half an inch from the opening, or the broken cord is dipped in carbolic acid or salicylic acid and collodion. If attention was always paid to the navel of newly-born calves, and to the cleanliness of the floor and cow’s udder and hind parts, fewer youngsters would die of the scour.
