This is one of the distinctly attractive productions of the fifteenth century press, admir- able for the insight it affords into every kind of agricultural operation, forming, as it does, a sort of ‘“‘ Gentleman’s Recreation.”’ In the twelve books of which it consists, every conceivable information is afforded to the Squire; he is instructed how to select the whereabouts of his estate, being guided hy aspect, the direction of prevailing winds, water-supply, and so on. Then the fullest advice is afforded in the preparation of building materials, and the construction of his house, farm buildings, water-courses, and the like. In the latter books, agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, and the nature and properties of alt manner of useful herbs are treated and profusely illustrated; the breeding and diseases of horses and cattle are exhaustively described, and finally field sports have their very full share of attention.
