Ilciillli (Sinokr AhaU'iiU'iit) Act, 1020, was passed and cainc into operation on fill' Ist duly, .1 027. 'Chis is a most imj)iirtant Act and is intended to be u.sed for the pnrpo.si' of improving the atmosphere of our towns. The expression “smoke ” now includes soot, ash, grit and gritty particles, and the law is strengthened in certain res])ect.s to enalile. action to be tak('n w ith a view to bringing about an impioveiiKmt regarding smok(> nui.sanees. During the year it was not found ])ossil)l(i to devote much time to this i)artieidar work, only .77 observations Ijeing taken, init several interviews took place with the Ihigineers of various linns, and in the ease of one of the largest brewing linns, as the result of these interviews, arrangements have been made for lixing auto- matic stokers of the iK'west type to prevent the emission of dense black .smoke, .and at the time of writing this re])ort Ihri'c boilers have been provichal with such apparatus and lliere is now no nuisance to Ik* obseiwed from the chimney into which the smok(' from these, boibas di.seharges. ft is intended to continue to instal such [)lant on the I'emaining boilers, and ex])eriments a7'e being tri(‘d to .see if such arc a])])]icable to co])per furnaces, which will bring about a tremendous diminution in the emission of smoke discharged into the atmosjdiere. In addition .wveral interviews took place \\ith the -Manager and Engineer f)f a Factory in the western part of the town aiul, as a result, the existing chimney was di.scardcfl and a new steel stack, 0-3 feet high, w;is erected, which has considerably inei'cascal the elliciency of the stiaim ])lant and practically aholished tlic nuisance.
