![) ✓ t *p* ] feized, late in the night, with very fevere vomiting and purging, acute fixed pain in the bowels, and frequent cramps of her legs ; by the ufe of mild diluents, fomentations to the abdomen, and fmall dofes of tindt. opii, given at fhortintervals, the fymptoms abated; but they returned the next night about the fame time, with equal violence. The fame plan of treatment w as purfued with advantage, and .a few dofes of bark were given; after which there was no return of the fymptoms. November.—The complaint of the bowels, which made its appearance towards the end of laft month, became fo frequent during the prefent one as to refemble an epidemic. The natives, in different parts of the river, did not efcape it, and fo frequent was it among them, that according to their cuftom, they attributed it to the effects of witchcraft. The pain was, in general, confined to the left fide, between the umbilicus and fpinous procefs of the ilium ; but (hooting pains were fometimes felt in the epigaftrium, with a fenfe of tightnefs:' the abdomen, when preffed, was ufually fore. The pain was not conftant, but generally abated for a few minutes, and returned with greater violence.
