The very great relief which perfons under inoculation experience from frefli air, cold water, and evacuations by ftool, during the fever preceding erup¬ tion, foon determined me to make trial, how far the like treatment might be ufeful to thofe who might be feized with the fmall pox in the natural way } more ef- pecially in fuch cafes, where from the vio¬ lence of the fym.ptoms, a confluent kind was juilly to be apprehended. But opportunities of making experiments of this fort in a fatisfadtory manner are rare.
