The exact number of casualties which occurred by this means is unknown. It will appear by this return, that the mean ratio of mortality among troops is much higher at Trincomalee than it is at Colombo, although the causes of the difference are not very obvious. As I served with the 73d Regiment during the above period, I had a good opportunity of obtaining exact re¬ turns ; and therefore I feel confident that the conclusions are quite correct. For the satisfaction, however, of my readers, I have subjoined a monthly abstract of the strength of the 73d Regiment, and the deaths which occurred in the corps during the years 1818, 1819, and 1820.
