    The Inven- tors. THE PREFACE. as of both thefe workmen would agret in expreffing the true refemblance, which is the effence of this arte : dittering perchance accidentally only, For one of them would fet the legge or atme ina’ diverfe pofition and gefture, although the'king had preferibed one certaine action and gefture.to them both,according to which he wouldbe drawne; fuppofe ftanding.; grant difference, which maketh nota fpecificall differencein an art onfeience . It’ is‘only the effentiall difference which maketh diftinGtion of {pecies,and di- verfitie of fcience . But this appeareth notin painting and carvings and fo it maketh no fpecificall difference to worke the kings Coiterfeit in ftone, marble,or ona table; with the pencellorcarving toolé : becaufe all thefe are materiall ‘differences. Sothat'as it were an abfurde thing for him. that worketh the king in marble, to fay to him that worketh him in woode ; that he were not acarver, becauife he wrought in woode; and himfelfein mar- ble : fo were it as idlea thing for the carver to fay tothe painter ; that they two were not exercifed about the fame arte 3 becaufe himfelfe workéth in marble; and the painteron a table or cloth; the one with a carving toole; and the other withapencell. ‘If then the diverfitie: of matter alone doth not caufe thediverlity of artes, we muftneedes conclude that:they can: riot bee diftin& and fpecificall artificers, whereof the one worketh the Counterfeit of the felfe fame thing in atable, and the other in marble. And although he reprefent the whole body of the king with althis lineamentesz: whichthe painter doth not ; yet it followethnot thatthey are diftinct artess becaule wore or lef make no-fpecificall or proper difference. So that this reafon will not follow : This figure’ is entirelyrounde ,.-and that but halfes therefore that is carved and this painted .“Orthus : The painter reprefenteth but one halfe in his pi@ure , and the carver thewhole, there- fore the one is a diftin@ arte from the other. For the reafon why the pain- ter expreffech but one fide or view, is,becaufe hee workethoma plaine: fo that ifhee expreffe but onehalfe of the pi@ure, whether it be forwardes or backewardes, it is by reafon of the imperfection of the matterswhich is flac and plaine ‘and not long of the arte. So that my abfolute conclutionis,that it is an arte,whereby you may workea figure inmarble, woode , filver, or golde; and by the fame draw it ona table, paper; or wallConcluding with all,that wee painters are converfant about the nroft difficult and abfolure part of the arte, (as in his due place fhalbefhewed:) becaufe, having diftourfed of the excellencie' thereof, by deducing itfrom the fimal/catife , the order of the place requireth;that Ithoulde likewife fay fomewhat of the efficient caufe’s referring the handling oftheformadland materialicaufessto the beginning of the firt booke’, Nowasthere are two things, which doe efpecially dignifie and nobilitatea mans firlt, nobility and the famoufneffè of his anceftours 5 fecondly, antiquities whichaddeth ve- ry much to the glory of nobilitie,and difcent:{o alliciences.are fo much the more famous,by how muchthe more famous} ‘and'aticfentthe gii cin HE, thereo
