On the contrary, in the treatment of the various fpecies of tetanus, niufk, opium, and others of a truly antifpaf- modic nature, are required to be adminiftered in very confiderable dofes, as fmaller ones have but too often been found ineffedlual; yet, in the generality of fpafmodic complaints, 1 think it ought to be obferved, that fuch ex- ceflive quantities ought never to be ventured on, until fmaller dofes are found not to avail. I have only had two cafes^ where 1 have found it necelTary to increafe the quantity of the ar- gentum nitratum beyond gr. i\ in the courfe of the day, and where a lefs proportion feera- i ed ineffedual. To fhew that Tome conftitu- tions can bear much larger proportions of this remedy, than others, the following is a ftri- king example : In the autumn of 1798,1 had under my care two female patients, (whofe names I am not authorifed to mention), affed:- ed with epilegfy to a very confiderable degree, both married women, nearly of the fame age, both ftout, and inclined to corpulency, and in both of whom the feverity as well as fre- quency of attack feemed nearly equal: one, however, had the advantage of a free country air$
