For lie himself must be well aware, that but a very small space intervenes between the orifice of the vagina and the meatus urinarius, and that these parts are constantly liable to come in contact with the glans penis in the act of coition. A slight attention to the relative situation of these organs, will show, that so far is the urethra from being beyond the reach of contagion, that it is in fact as much exposed as any other part to the lodgment of morbific matter. Besides, when a discharge from the vagina has existed for some time, and even before that has taken place, the irritation and inflammation may spread from the original seat of the disease to parts not pri¬ marily concerned. The remarkable sympathy which is known to exist between different sur¬ faces or membranes of the same character, is of itself sufficient to account for the fact, had not experience informed us that we rarely meet with a case of what Swediauu has termed the Blen- norrhagia Syphilitica, in which the urethra is not implicated.
