    EDITOR S INTRODUCTORY NOTE One of the anomalies of the modern social curriculum is the neglect of instruction in marriage and family relationships. It is difficult to explain why dependable courses dealing with mar riage, parental education, family affairs, and other fundamental aspects of man's most important social relation have been al most wholly missing from the college and university curriculum, as well as from those of public schools and teacher training institutions. And it is freely predicted by many students of the social sciences and education that the time is not far distant when every senior, man or woman, who graduates from a major college, will have had an opportunity to take such a course, with many institutions requiring for graduation some instruction in this field. A paradox to this situation is the tremendous interest and effort devoted to the subject on the part of scholars, social work ers and social scientists outside the class room and in programs of discussions and study. The limitations of this procedure are evident. The youth of the land are the starting points to the greater era of the future. There is no reasonable or even plausible excuse for neglecting them. Likewise, there is danger of turning the whole study into one of superficial discussion or sensational debate and presentation. What is needed above all else is substantial factual evidence and scientific methods of study. In this volume will be found valuable contributions to the two main types of evidence. The one, an exhaustive statis tical study for which there is no substitute, Professor Ogburn has presented with great pains and scholarship. The other, evidence gathered from summarizing many efforts and tendencies of the present era, and from case studies of successful marriage, Professor Groves presents with fine results and promise. And in each of these two larger phases of inquiry, the text provides something of methodology for continuing study of such propor tion as student or teacher may desire. V
