![ENGLAND The first European paper that was used in England came from Italy and France from the early 14th century until the end of the 16th century. During this period there were two English mills: that of John Tate at Stevenage in Herts 1494—98, and that of John Spielman at Hartford in Kent 1588—1605. Wynkyn de Worde printed on Tate’s paper in the production of Bartho- lomaeus’ “De Proprietatibus Rerum” and Caxton’s translation of the “Legende Aurea” of Jacobus de Voragine. A rare, and perhaps unique combination consists of Caxton’s Printer’s device and Tate’s (21) watermark on the same sheet. This curiosity is treasured in the office of the Paper Makers’ Association of Great Britain. The following is an eye-copy of it: [39]](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b31345736_0043.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
