Trastena is a small community of 500 inhabitants. The first case of poliomyelitis occurred in February and March in the little village of Sandbachen, three kilometres from the town of Marienstad, ten kilometres from Trastena. Three children were attacked in the same family on February 14th, and March 4th and 6th. One of these died. The others lived and were paralysed in the lower extremities. For three months no further case occurred in this region. On May 31st and June Ist in the town of Marienstad twe children were attacked in the same house; both had paralysis of the upper and lower extremities. On June 28th the first case occurred in Trastena in an isolated house. In rapid succession 49 inhabitants were taken ill, the majority being children. In the 102 houses of Trastena there lived 132 families, and 19 houses were affected.
