Description
"When the British took possession of Cyprus numerous prisons were found to be full of convicts undergoing their sentence, and after some discussion it was determined to send them in a British ironclad to Turkey, there to be distributed amongst the various Ottoman penal settlements. ... These men were the worst criminals collected from different parts of the Turkish Empire, but the Mahomedan population appeared grieved to see them go, and as they marched away the women spectators gave vent to a low, monotonous wailing. ... "--The graphic, op. cit. p.
One of the men has a box inscribed "H.J & Co."
