Lisbon, 22nd October, 1586. £5 5s As Prior of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, the Cardinal-Arch- duke appoints Gaspar de Sousa to the post of Alcaide-Mor of Amiueira. The Archduke Albert of Austria was a nephew of Philyp II, and was in charge of the Government of Portugal during Philip’s absence m Spain at that time, and did much to combat the efforts of Don Antonio of Portugal (pretender to the throne) to recapture the crown which had actually been granted to him by the people of Santarem. Don Antonio was assisted by an English fleet, under Drake’s com- mand, who attacked Lisbon, about that period, but were repulsed. 6 ALFONSO IV (¢1299-1336). King of Aragon.
