    Much, however, will be learnt from these pictures by anyone who will use them as a means to an end, and not as the end itself. To such an one they will explain many things which he will remember to have seen and not understood ; they will in the future enable him both to see and to perceive. This work is, to some extent, an amplification of the Lantern Lectures which I have delivered at the Royal Westminster Ophthalmic and at St. George's Hospitals, and such of my readers who attended those lectures will recognise many of the lantern slides. Many new drawings have, however, been added, and the text is much fuller than was possible in a course of lectures.
