    MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. 15th JUNE, 1868. At the date of last Annual Meeting, the number of patients in the Asylum was 83 males and 99 females, 182 total. 61 patients have since been admitted, of whom 26 were males and 35 females ; 24 have been discharged recovered; ] 2 removed, not recovered ; 14 have died ; and 1 is at present absent on proba¬ tion. The numbers remaining, viz. 94 males and 97 females, show an increase for the year of 9 patients. The percentage of recoveries calculated on the number admitted is therefore 39'34, while that of the deaths calculated on the whole number under treatment is 5‘76. It will be observed that while the rate of mortality is thus again about the average, the proportion of recoveries is this year consider¬ ably below what has usually been obtained in this Institution, a circumstance due in a great measure to the unfavourable cha¬ racter of the male cases admitted. Taking the female patients alone, the percentage of recoveries amounts to 57’14. Of the 61 patients admitted, 15 were supported by their friends, and 46 by the following parishes, viz. Dundee, Liff and Benvie, Kirriemuir, and Mains and Strathmartine. Of the male patients admitted, 6 were suffering from more or less advanced paralysis, 3 from chronic insanity of more than two years' standing, 3 from epilepsy, and 1 was in a dying state.
