About this work
Description
This programme looks at people with extreme sleep disorders: people mention shouting, self-harming, texting, having sex, eating and even jumping out of a window (twice); this is known as parasomnia. Professor Adrian Williams from St. Thomas' Sleep Disorder Centre comments on how the stresses of everyday life is effecting the quality of our sleep; there has been a massive increase in referals to his clinic. Dr John O'Reilly, Aintree Hospital Sleep Centre corroborates this. Dr Ian Smith, Papworth Sleep Centre, reveals the increase in using technology whilst asleep. One young man returns to St Thomas', having been considered untreatable, and is given medication which may help. Another man describes his unease at his sexsomnia. Footage is played back to the people of their night terrors. Medication can be hit and miss; some people report benefits and another embraces alternative therapy.
