The author (1662-1748) lived at Paris and Mont- pellier, later as professor of medicine at Padua. With the present treatise he gained his doctor’s degree at Leyden. An account of the principal events of the French expedition to Egypt and a record of all the diseases the author observed during his stay, especially Egyptian ophthalmia (the contagious nature of which he was the first to point out), tetanus and plague. The chief work by this distinguished physiologist, in which the neuro- genic theory of the action of the heart (Borelli) was revived. ‘‘ His discovery that a lesion of a small circumscribed area of the medulla inhibits breathing was the first attempt to localize the centre of respiration and was afterwards com- pleted by the work of Flourens (see p. 37 of this book). Lind (1716-1794) was the founder of naval hygienein England. Whilein naval medical service he visited the Guinea Coast and the West Indies, where he gained the ex- perience which enabled him later to write his famous book on scurvy. Owing to the acceptance of the remedies which he recommends in this book scurvy has practically disappeared from the navy. The book was first published in 1754 and the present French edition is interesting as it also contains Boerhaave’s treatise on the same subject and so enables the reader by comparison to see what an enormous advance Lind’s book was on earlier writings on the same subject. tatus. The author (1573-1655) was a distinguished physician of the time who after having lived at Montpellier and Paris came to London where he became physician to James I., Charles I. and Charles II. First ENGLISH EDITION. Very rare. The British Museum has only an imperfect copy. Very slight dampstain on blank margins of a few leaves, but a fine copy. Physica, tractatibus quinque comprehensa. The Hague, Arnold Leere, 1681 £8 8s 8vo. Vellum. Title in red and black and seven engraved plates at the end. Fine engraved portrait. This Opera Omnia is a reprint of the Tracta- tus quinque medico-physici printed at Oxford in 1674. “‘Mayow demonstrated in a series of con- vincing experiments that the dark venous blood is changed to bright red by taking up a certain ingredient from the air, which as being a con- stituent of nitre (K N O38) he termed the nitro aerial spirit. He was thus very close to the actual discovery of oxygen . .. he also saw that the maternal blood supplies the foetus not only with food, but with oxygen (nitro-aer) ... Mayow was a chemist and physiologist of true genius and his Tractatus quinque deservedly ranks to-day with the very best of the English medical classics.”’ (GARRISON). A very fine copy and very rare.
