![No. 44. BLACK-WILLOW BUDS. The A men is of Salix Nigra. Natural Order.—Silacacese. Habitat.—United States. Common Name.—Black-Willow Buds. Active Constituents.—Salicine, Tannin, Bitter extractive. The medicinal properties of these buds rank as a tonic, anti- periodic, and astringent; it is, also, reputed to be valuable in cases of gangrene, used locally as well as taken internally. The infusion, when drunk freely, is said to be a powerful anaphro- disiac, suppressing the venereal desire and is highly recom- mended in spermatorrhoea. Dose.—]/2 to i fluid drachm (1.90—3.75 c. c). PREPARATIONS. Tincture of Black-Willow Buds. Fluid Extract 4 fluid ounces (120. c. c.) Alcohol 8 fluid ounces (240. c. c.) Water 4 fluid ounces (120. c. c.) M. and filter. Dose.—2 to 4 fluid drachms (7.50—15. c. c). Infusion of Black-Willow Buds. Fluid Extract 2 fluid ounces ( 60. c. c.) Hot Water 14 fluid ounces (420. c. c.) M. Dose.—1 to 2 fluid drachms (30.—60. c. c). No. 45. BLOOD BOOT (Assayed), U. S. P., 1880. The Fresh Root of Sanguinaria Canadensis. Natural Order.—Papaveracese. Habitat.—North America. Common Names.—Red Root, Puccoon Root. Active Constituents.—Resins, Sanguinarine, (Contains not less than 1 per cent, of natural alkaloid—Sanguinarine.) Therapeutically, this is an invaluable stimulant expectorant, with feeble narcotic properties. It is also an acrid emetic and should be cautiously prescribed.
