    ( ) cines, Sir George Baker, to whom alfo I mentioned this matter, (thinking the fubjedt highly meriting, and wifhing to have the opinion of abler hands,) does not think the difeafe of the thyroid gland originally water. When I was informed the late Mr. Sharp had men- tioned this difeafe, in his Letters, I was in hopes I fhould there have met with a full account of it, as it appears upon, and affedls the inhabitants about the Alps, and other parts of Italy; but I am fomewhat difappointed, “ the fwellings being fo enormous, and of fo loathfome an appearance, efpecially in ugly, ragged, half-ftarved old women, that it feems the very fight of them turned this gentleman’s ftomach,” fo that he was too foon Tick of the matter, to make a full enquiry ; or I dare fay he would have informed us more particularly of the fituation of this tumor, of its progrefs in growth, and whether they attempt any remedy. However, he obferves it to be very common amongft the inhabitants of both, fexes, and though he was apprifed before he went into Savoy, of the inhabitants being fubjedl to this diftemper, yet he had no idea of its univerfality ; for, fays he, as we approach towards Mount Cenis, we find very few exempt from it.
