Collection of cookery receipts, with a few medical and household receipts.

The 24 ll. at the beginning, and the 24 ll. at the end are later additions bound in. In the first of these, the dates 1818 to 1831 are found: the entries are by different hands. The main part of the text contains many additions by numerous 18th and early 19th cent. hands.

Biographical note

The original compiler of the collection seems to have been the Elizabeth Philipps whose name with the date 1694 appears on the leaf before the beginning of the pagination, together with the price of the book-4s. 6d. Below her name, in another hand, is written 'Elizabeth Johnson the gift of her Mother Johnson'. Under this is a line heavily crossed through, and below in an early 19th cent. hand [c. 1820] 'Maurice Johnson of Spalding in Lincolnshire claims this Family Book as of right it belongs to him'. This may be the Maurice Johnson, Vicar of Spalding [1755-1834].
