    INTRODUCTION Memory involves a record of sensations, events, experiences and ideas. The nature and location of this record is still the subject of much speculation. One school holds that Memory may be referred to changes in cerebral or nervous structure which persist and serve as the foundation for the recall of the past. Another school postulates a psychic structure which is capable of receiving and retaining mnemic impressions. It is the development of the latter theory in a more concrete form in order to contrast it with the rival theory which is the object of this essay. One of the best exponents of the theory of memory traces in material structure is Professor R. Semon, and his hypothesis of engrams is worked out in detail in The Mneme and in Mnemic Psychology.
