This Outfit is intended to be used in the following way ;— (1) It is to be notuil tiiat tho tubt'S containing tlie swabs liave been sterilized, and that they should not be opened until immediately before use, that the blood should lx; collected (piickly on tlu! swab, and the latter returned iminediatel}' to tho tubt', which should be corked tightly. It is a<lvisablc not to lay the tulx- down on any object while it is open during t he proce.ss of impregnating the swab, otherwise it may become grossly contaminated. (2) In the case of an animal which is suspected to have died of anthrax, the ear should he amimtated or partially amputated close to the biv.se. or a small incision should be made into one of tho su}X!rlicial and ]X!ripheral bl«x)fl vessels. (3) The cork to which the nxl containing the swab is attached should be quickly taken from tho tul)c. The swab should Ix) soaked in the blood which has colkxded at the site of the incision, iind immediately returned to the tulx). (4) In the case of a pig or horse it will be better to rub the swab on the cut surface of a superficial lympluitic gland, such as the .submaxillary. (5) With blood from the incision or with material from the lymphatic gland, as the case may be, smears can be made on tho glass slides for microscopical examination. For this purpo.se it is best to spread the material out with a loofxid platinum wire which can be immediately' afterwanls sterilized in a spirit flame, and used indefinitely. A smear, however, may also 1k‘ made by dipping the end of a glass slide in the material, and drawing it firmly along the surface of the slide which is to be used for microseopical examination. It is advisable that the smears should not be thick. (6) The smears should be dried quickly by waving them about in the air or by holding them above a spirit flame at A temperature which the hand can bear. (7) When thoroughly dried the slides should bo returned to the w'ooden box. (8) To meet the requirements of the Fost Office Authorities the cork of tho glass tube should be sealed round with wax, and a piece of twine should he tied round tho wooden ease for the purpo.se of more firmly securing the lid. (0) It is advisable of course, when po.ssible, to carry out the manipulations with the aid of forceps. (10) It is to be noted that these specimens, in accordance with the Post Office Kegulatioius, should be tran.«mitted by letter post only.
