    a male that will be thoroughly suitable for heading up the herd as areliable breeder. To do this it is best to try to secure a male of pure breed. In India there are several breeds that may be said to be pure, or so nearly so that their progeny practically always are born true to the quali- ties or characteristics of that particular breed. For instance, there is the Surti breed, which originated in or near the city of Surat, in Gujerat. There is also the Jamnapara breed which is said to have originated in the city of Luck- now, or in that general region; there is a breed in Hydera- bad State sometimes called the Oosmanabad breed ; and there is also the ‘West Coast’ breed which is supposed to have originated in the Malabar region. All of these breeds are noted for their good milking qualities, and there are probably other breeds which, at present, do not seem to be quite so well known. If one should secure a good male of any one of these breeds, whose ancestors were known to be good milk goats, one could allow him to be mated to the females of country origin in one’s herd with a sure feeling that there would be a decided improvement in the milking qualities of the females born from such mating. All such females should be kept and carefully raised for breeding purposes, although later on it will be found that even amongst them there will be some better than others, and when this is known, only those best milkers should be used for breeding and the others disposed of, Not a single male kid should be kept but should early be castrated, ‘then allowed to grow to maturity when all such should be fattened and sold tothe butcher. It will pay to do this for they will bring a better price than ordinary goats—at least one should demand a better price. If such ‘mixed-breed’ males are kept for breeding the re- sults are likely to be disappointing, the reason being that
