    PREFACE. The preparation of this httle book, which the writer now offers to the medical pubhc, has been undertaken at the earnest sohcitation of numerous practitioners who have from time to time attended upon his chnics, and who have expressed them- selves as unable to acquire the technique requisite for the per- formance of the mastoid operation, under stress of emergency, from any of the standard works upon otology or from such ex- perience as can be gained by witnessing at the hands of skilful surgeons the relatively small number of operations which are open to public inspection during the necessarily infrequent and brief visits to the metropolis which the exigencies of busy prac- tice permit. Largely in the interest of the class mentioned the appended detailed technique, with the accompanying graphic illustrations, has been attempted, and with a view also to lightening the per- plexities of the bewildered beginner who is making a serious study of otology with the ultimate purpose of exclusive practice in that branch.
