With the exception of some twenty cottages, the district is supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board. The water from one shallow well was analysed during the year and was found to be so polluted as to be unfit for use for domestic purposes. The well was closed by the owner and the supply from the main substituted. Rivers and Streams. During the hot weather in July a nuisance arose in the river Crane in the neighbourhood of Cole’s Bridge owing to the low level of the water, and consequent putrefaction of vegetable material in the stream. This was remedied immediately and the nuisance did not recur. Eel Pie Island. The insanitary condition of Eel Pie Island was referred to in my report for the year 1911, and it was hoped that some action would have been taken to remedy the defects existing. The increasing popularity of the island as a pleasure resort and place of summer residence renders its insanitary condition one of increasing importance. The Hotel is the largest occupied building on the island, and there are fifteen other premises, the majority of which are used for residential purposes during the summer months only, although some are occupied
