    The number of cases treated in the wards as compared with that of the preceding year, is as follows :— 1903. 1904. Cases in the Hospital at the beginning of the year ... ... ... 20 41 Cases admitted during the year ... 634 722 654 763 The total out-patient attendances during the year were 53,782 as compared with 50,555 in 1903,— an increase of 3,227. During the year, isolated cases of infectious disease have from time to time occurred in the wards, but nothing approaching an epidemic has prevailed, and it has never been necessary to close a ward for more than a few days at a time for the purpose of cleaning and disinfecting. The Committee note with satisfaction that, although a considerably larger number of patients was treated during the year, the total cost was only £122 ns. 6d. more than in 1903. While every effort is made to restrict expenditure so far as practicable, the Committee feel that they cannot reasonably hope for any great reduction in the annual ordinary expenditure ; indeed, in view of the changes necessitated by surgical and medical progress on the one hand, and the cost of work and supplies on the other, it seems inevitable that the tendency must be towards an increase.
