A new American, from the last revised and enlarged English edition, with Additions, by D. Francis Condie, M. U., author of A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Children, &rc. With one hundred and eighty.five illustrations on wood. In one very large and hand-ome volume, imperial octavo, of over 1200 closely printed pages in small type; extra cloth, $6 00; strongly bound in leather, with raised bands, $7 00. That the high reputation of this work might be fully maintained, the author has subjected it to a thorough revision ; every portion has been examined with the aid of the most recent researches in pathology, and the results of modern investigations in both theoretical and practical subjects have been carefully weighed and embodied throughout its pages. The watchful scrutiny of the editor has likewise introduced whatever possesses immediate importance to the American physician in relation to diseases incident to our climate which are little known in England, as well as those points in which experience here has led to different modes of practice ; and he has also added largely to the series of illustrations, believing that in this manner valuable assistance may be conveyed to the student in elucidating the text. The work will, therefore, be found thoroughly on a level with the most advanced slate of medical science on both sides of the Atlantic. The additions which the work has received are shown by the tact that notwithstanding an en- largement in the size of the page, more than two hundred additional pages have been necessary to accommodate the two large volumes of the London edition (which sells at ten dollars), within the compass oi a single volume, and in its present form it contains the matter ol at least three ordinary octavos. Believing it to be a work which should lie on the table of every physician, and be in the hands of every student, the publishers have put it at aprice within the reach of all, making it one of the cheapest books as yet presented to the American profession, while at the same time the beauty of its mechanical execution renders it an exceedingly attractive volume. The fourth edition now appears, so carefully re- vised, as to add considerably to the value of a book alread\ acknowledged, wherever the English lan- guage is read, to be beyond all comparison the best systematic work on the Principles and Practice of Physic in the whole range of medical literature. The amount of additions which it has thus received may be estimated from the fact that the present edition contains over one-fourth more matter than the last, rendering a .-mailer type and an enlarged page requisite to keep the volume within a convenient size. The editor has exercised the utmost caution to obtain entire accuracy in the text, and has largely increased the number of illustra- tions, of which there are about one hundred and fifty more in this edition than in the last, thus bringing di-tinctly before the eye ol the student everything of interest or importance.
