    PREFACE. Tue Essay which my colleague, M. Bous- - singault, and I now submit to the public, com- prises, in brief terms, an exposition of the grand features in the life of plants and animals considered in a chemical point of view. It presents a variety of new views, calculated to supply general physiology, medicine, and agriculture, with grounds upon which the study of the chemical phenomena that take place in organised beings may be advantageously pur- sued. We feel intimately persuaded that the con- siderations embraced in this Essay may hence- forth be made to bear upon many of the most important questions of public economy.— Not that we have given such developement to our principles as makes them always obviously
