![Johann Peter Griess, born at Kirchhosbach, Hesse-Cassel, 6th Sept. 1829. A student first at the Polytechnic in Cassel, then in the University of Jena, and in 1851 at the University of Marburg. In 1858 he came to London as assistant in the Royal College of Chemistry under Hofmann. In 1862 he was appointed chemist in the brewery of Allsop & Sons at Burton- on-Trent. He died suddenly at Bournemouth, 30th Aug. 1888. [uZur Erinnerung an Peter Griess.” By Hofmann, Emil Fischer, and Caro. Ber., 24, Ref. 1007 (1891).] Walter Noel Hartley, Knt, F.R.S., was born in 1846. After acting for some years as Demonstrator of Chemistry in King’s College, London, he was appointed Professor of Chemistry in the Royal College of Science, Dublin, from which office he retired in 1911. In 1906 he was awarded the Longstaff Medal of the Chemical Society for his researches in spectro-chemistry. He died 10th September 1913. William Henry, born at Manchester, 12th Dec. 1774. Doctor of Medicine and manufacturer of “ Henry’s magnesia,” &c. Died 2nd Sept. 1836. [Poggendorffs Handivorterbuch.] Arthur Croft Hill, M.A., M.D. Camb. Physician. Edmund Jenner, born 17th May 1749, at Berkeley,'Glos. A pupil of John Hunter. M.D., F.R.S. Discoverer of vac¬ cination. Died 26th Jan, 1823.
