![<3* ) “ The fupprdTion of all titles of nobility* which u was decreed laft Saturday evening by the National A Tern* biv of France, is, perhaps, the moft memorable victory c* obtained hy reafon over that prejudice which had for ages cc hungclofeft to the human heart—the pride cf rank and ts anceftry. * * * * Titles, armorial bearings, liveries, and all 4i the other appendages of nobility, are abolijhed\ every one is “ to be known by his family name and the term citizen, <c with the epithet good prefixed to it, is in future the moft u honourable diflindtion in France.’* And in the General Evening Poll, dated July 6, 1790, we have this intelligence: tf The King of France has given his affent to the Decree ■<* of the National Aftembly, abolifhing all hereditary nobi- <f lity, and forbidding the titles of Prince, Duke, Count, “ or Marquis, to be employed in future.” No. VI. €( National Ajfcmbly, February t4,1790. ff The Aftembly finally came to the Refolution of diftblv- u ing the monaftic houfes. Tnc Decree was as follows : lK The National Aftembly decree, as a conftitutiona] Ar~ «* tide, that the law will no longer recegnife the folemn mo- “ naftic vows of perfons of either fex. They declare, in confequence, that the regular orders and congregations, it “ which fuch vows are taken, are, and (hall henceforth re- u main fupprejfed\ and under no pretence fhall be capable cf u rc-eftablifhing in France for the future. F All the individuals of either fex, now living in the cloif- “ ters, may depart therefrom, by making their declaration <f to the municipality of the place.
