    CHAPTER III METHODS OF STUDY ‘ The slow development of bacteriology was largely due to the lack of method in the study; and not until Pasteur, Koch, and others demonstrated that methods of scientific exactness must be em- ployed was any real progress made. Until this was done the mere fact that bacteria existed stood for very little, as no one could say what effects they produced nor what part they filled in the scheme of nature. “The technique of bacteriology is one of its greatest contributions to both science and art, and the use of so valuable and simple a tool should be mastered not only by the biological teacher, but by practical workers in medicine, hygiene, and many other fields.” (Jordan.)
