![METHOMAOTA. I HAVE selected this title as an appropriate general name for that disease which, in its several forms or stages of development, is va- riously termed Drunkenness, Inebriety, Dip- somania, Methexia, &c. Causes. — The simple form of this disease results from the introduction into the system of any of those poisons which first stimulate, then narcotize. The chronic form has often causes more remote than continuous stimulation, under the action of which the passion for stimulants amounts to a mania, seemingly irresistible and incurable. These causes are either idio- pathic, or are induced by habits or manner of life.
