    have foiind that a cheap and perfect cyrtometer may be made by two pieces of composition gas- pipe, drawn out to a diameter of the eighth of •an inch, and united by a piece of caoutchouc tubing. The advantage of the composition alloy is that it possesses very little resiliency. A few experiments with the cyrtometer are all that is necessary in order to become skilful in its use. The instrument, after having been accurately apphed to a given circumference of the chest, is removed, and will then afford an exact tracino- -of that circumference. It is needless to add that the cyrtometer is the best means of measurino' the chest. In order to illustrate the statements just made respecting the different shapes of the thorax at different ages, I will give some actual measurements, taken upon the level of the sternoxiphoid joint, and so calculated that the •circumference always = 100.
