    Apollo, and that its wings are extended over their heads as well as over those of royal fe- males as an ornament, its head being advanced before the forehead, as, in other cases, that of the agathodemon, or snake. The eighth and last of the great deities is Mendes,” or the generative power of nature. He is represented under the form of a human figure, with the head of a goat advanced in front of the forehead,’ and designated hierogly- phically by a square, a dot, and a chicken watching over them.‘ He is represented under other forms in his generative capacity, which it will not be necessary for me here to enter upon. I have not yet discovered his phonetic name. * Having so often quoted this author, 1 may here state, that though I am convinced, for numerous reasons, that the first book, and the first part of the second, are written by a person perfectly acquainted with Egyptian hieroglyphics, yet so am I perfectly persuaded that the remainder is a vile interpolation, excepting perhaps the three or four last hieroglyphics, which seem to have been reserved from the original work, and placed at the end, more effectually to deceive the reader. * 4H, Plate III. 3 Plate II],H, 58. + Plate III, H, 57,
