About this work

Description

Using commentary over the pictures, this film tells of a pioneering attack on yaws, a disease endemic in the Oji River region of Eastern Nigeria, in which two million people were treated or protected between 1954- 57. Action was taken by a treatment programme carried out with the assistance of the United Nations Children's Fund. People suffering from yaws queue for penicillin injections; a case of yaws is shown before and after treatment. Mass treatment was followed by a prevention programme by which households were visited to check for signs of yaws and provide immediate treatment.
