The defired efredt not being gained by thefe means, the tumor was punctured. It filled again, but with de- creafed frze ; and after the third pun&ure, entirely difappeared. This is a practice almofl always fuccefsful, and certainly pre- ferable to that of the cauftic, as it requires a repetition much lefs frequent, is at- tended with lefs pain, and never irritates the lids; which .the other, however care- fully ufed, generally does. r_. j • , . Where the flaphyloma is fmall, a fingle pundture isufbally fuccefsful. The cauffic probably a6ls as a ftrong flimulus to the mufcular fibres of the iris, caufing them to contra61: the pundture removes the preffure of the aqueous humor, and allows time for the fibres to regain their natural tone before re-union takes place.
