Faithorne, blank margins mended, the extremely rare plate after Sir Peter Lely (engraved by Faithorne) at p. 145; two or three leaves, on account of ir- regular registering, are slightly cut into on fore-margins, otherwise a large copy in the original sheep, with the arms of Philip Stanhope, Second Earl of Chesterfield, stamped in gold on side, and “ ex-Libris” inside cover, EXTREMELY SCARCE T. Harper & T. Ewster, 1649 PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO CHARLES COTTON, with inscription on fly-leaf “ Oharles Cotton ex dono Authoris.” Cotton evidently passed the volume on to his kinsman, and patron of John Dryden, the Earl of Chesterfield, whose arms it now bears. PART OF MY LIFE, BEGUN AUG: 1739, ON BOARD THE “ELIZABETH,” CAPTAIN STEVENSON, BOUND FROM ENGLAND TO PHILADELPHIA, AFTER HAVING PRAYED FOR FREEDOM OF SPIRIT TO WRITE IT FOR ABOVE THREE YEARS SUCCES- SIVELY,” the ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, on 130 octavo pages, © finished on board the Elizabeth, Saturday, Sept. 8th, much assisted & felt great freedom & peace of soul when I resolved to print it—Benedictu benedicat et benedi- excelsis Deo!” AT THE END OF PAGE 129 ARE HIS INITIALS, G. W. bound in half calf This extremely interesting relic of the great preacher, not- withstanding his resolution, appears to be unpublished. On the inside of the cover is written the following : “This Manu- script was given to me by Mr. Dixon school master at the Orphan house Georgia in June 1769” [Cornelius Winter], July 30, 1864. It is my wish that after my decease that after my decease (s¢c) this manuscript be delivered up & re- turned to my elder nephew George Elgar Sloper, Esq. at present residing at No. 7, Grosvenor Square, Southampton. N.B. This book was given to me and my late dear Brother Nathaniel Elgar Sloper, it was given to us jointly by the late Rev: Cornelius Winter in my late dear Father’s parlour in Devizes, Wilts. — Memorandum George Elgar Sloper.” The son of the elder nephew is the present pos- sessor.
