    himself did not show it for forty-five years. Explain this to me, he says, and I will believe as many more miracles as you like. Provided, of course, that the explanation is not (as it usually turns out) more complicated than the facts. No one could answer Montaigne's problem at that time with reason and in consequence superstition was called upon to fill the gap. Hence, from these early centuries of argument, as M. Senebier says, what was learnt proved to be the most incredible ideas, the most flagrant contradictions, and the most incoherent travesties of nature. Our next business is therefore to discover how in the last three hundred years with new tools, new ideas, and new methods of organized inquiry man has in the end found out how to tackle the problem. 31
