    (c) That the otter of Mrs. H. Stodel to organise the May collection in Cape Town area be accepted; (d) That the authority required for making' these street col lections be obtained by the Board from the Muni¬ cipal Councils concerned. Permission was given by the City Council for holding the new' mid-week collection on the second instead of the first- Wed nesday in May. hut thanks to the very able efforts of the organisers, Mrs. It. It. Brydone and Mrs. H. Stodel, a sum of over £500 was collected. With regard to the Hospital Saturday collection it was found that permission had been given to the Cape Town-Wynberg General Board of Aid to make a street collection on the first Saturday of every month throughout the year, and notwithstanding that special re¬ presentations were made to the City Council and the Board of Aid the Hospital Saturday Collection had to take second Place, and was accordingly held on the second Saturday in October. The Board decided to make timely application for permission for their two street collections during- 1923, and after interviewing* His Worship the Mayor of Capetown, a written request was sent to the Town Clerk on 30th October last for the required permission in respect of Wednesday, 2nd May, and Saturday, 3rd November, 1923. Not until 28tli December was- a reply received from the Town Clerk, and this was a refusal of both the Board’s requests on the grounds (1) that permission had already been granted to the Ciape Town-Wynberg General Board of Aid to Hold collections on the first Saturday in every month during 1923, and (2) that a collection on Wednesday, 2nd May, would immediately precede a- monthly collection of-the Board of Aid and would prejudice that collection. This decision of the responsible Committee of the City Council was reported to the Board on 24th January, and it was then decided that a deputation consisting of all the members of the Board should wait upon the City Council with a. view to having the matter re¬ considered and the application of the Board acceded to. It was also resolved that the deputation, in urging the claims of the Hospitals of the Peninsula, should direct particular at¬ tention to the history of the Hospital Saturday movement in Cape Town and suburbs, as the Hospital Saturday collection has been an annual one for over twenty vears and was the pioneer of street collections in Cape Town.
