Manuscript inscription on back of frame: "Dr. Baillie, after a bust by Chantrey in the possession of the Royal College of Physicians, modelled by Edward W. Wyon, 48 Gower Street, Bedford Sqre. 1847."

Wyon's portrait shows a partial left profile of Chantrey's marble bust in the Royal College of Physicians, commissioned by the College in 1824, which in turn is a copy of Nollekens' marble bust in the Royal College of Surgeons, dated 1812.
