Preface each organism, but quickly abandoned this as impractical. I essen¬ tially eliminated the subject of hybridization, leaving this topic to other workers and volumes. Polyploidy went the same way and G.L. Stebbins quickly rescued me. I then eliminated most papers which did not emphasize the genetic mechanism. Final reductions were accomplished by focusing my objectives and building linkages between the papers. The list that existed at this point is discussed in the book. The last reduction in the list and indeed the most painful came with the necessity to meet the publisher-imposed limit on the number of pages. This required letters to some colleagues to explain why I had to omit their cherished words when I had previously requested permission to use them. I àm solely responsible for the final selection. Many colleagues offered suggestions and they were appreciated. James Crow, Sewall Wright, and W. Atchley kindly read the manuscript. This book is dedicated to W. F. Blair, a leader in the develop¬ ment of an understanding of the gene in natural populations of vertebrates.
