Sheffield is the third market-town in the county of York in number of inhabitants, and celebrated for its hardware manu- factures. Hathersage is a pleasant village, celebrated for the manufacture of needles and buttons. Hathersage Hall is the seat of Ashton Ashton Shuttleworth, esq. L. Brough, formerly a Roman Station. Hope is a small pleasant market-town. Castleton, seated in a deep valley, is celebrated for its ancient castle and mines: thecavern; the shivering mountain, called Mam Tor; the beautiful fluorspar; the Speedwell level; the encampment on Mam Tor, &c. see History of, page 57. Chapel-en-le-Frith, a small market-town, see Road Sketch, No. 5. Near to Chapel-en-le-Frith is the celebrated Ebbing and Flowing well. L. Bank Hall, the seat of John Frith, esq. Taxall Lodge, the seat of G. W. Newton, esq. Lyme Park, the seat of Thomas Legh, esq. Stockport is a large market-town, supported chiefly by the cotton trade. Manchester is the second town in the kingdom in number of in- habitants, and is celebrated for its manufacture of cotton goods, in which the majority of the people is employed. It is thecentreof a great manufacturing district; and bvitsclose connexion with Liverpool, by means of the new rail-road, has become one of the most distinguished towns of the empire.
